Fishery and aquaculture production slightly rises at end September

Fishery and aquaculture production reached about 91.4 thousand tonnes at the end of September 2017, compared with 90.4 thousand tonnes in the same period of 2016, up 1%, according to data released Wednesday by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries.

Aquaculture production stabilised at around 78 thousand tonnes at the end of September 2017, compared to the same period of 2016.

Bluefish fishery grew by 17% (up 5.7 thousand tonnes compared to the same period of 2016). This result made it possible to cover the decline recorded particularly in deep-sea fishing production.

Aquaculture production reached 13 thousand tonnes in the first 9 months of 2017, compared with 12 thousand tonnes recorded during the same period of 2016, i.e. an increase of 11%.

During the same period, exports of fishery products stabilised at the quantitative level at around 17 thousand tonnes and posted an increase in value (from 227.2 MD in 2016 to 292.5 MD in 2017), up 65.3MD (a growth of 28.7%).

The department explained this increase (in terms of value) by the rise in average export prices, especially fresh fish and shellfish.

The same source said the trade balance recorded a rise of 173 MD against 114.8 MD during the same period 2016.
