FNCT calls on high authorities to discuss future of municipalities

President of the National Federation of Tunisian Municipalities (FNCT) Adnene Bouassida called on the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister to hold a meeting with the federation to discuss the various problems facing municipalities today and find appropriate solutions.

The federation had sent a correspondence to President of the Republic Kais Saied, Prime Minister Najla Bouden and Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine, inviting them to dialogue ahead of the next municipal elections scheduled for 2023, Bouassida stated to TAP indicating that to date this request has not been answered.

He explained that the municipalities have assumed responsibilities that are normally incumbent to the State.

The official raised the issue of instability in the various municipal councils, notably due to the slow implementation of the decentralisation process and the lack of human and financial resources, in addition to the lack of clarity in the sharing of competences and roles between the central and local authorities.
