Four killed, 19 injured in chain-reaction crashes on Sousse-Sfax highway

Four people, including two national guards, died on Saturday morning and a further 19 sustained injuries in two road accidents on Sousse-Sfax highway, Regional Director for Civil Protection Mohamed Salah Ben Ansa told TAP. A heavy fog would be the cause.

The first accident occurred on A1 highway in Menzel Hayet, Monastir, and left a number of injured people; material damage was also reported.

Four people were killed in the second accident which occurred shortly afterwards on the same highway in Karkar (governorate of Mahdia); this brought the total number of the injured to 19, including three national guards. Over 30 civil protection trucks were dispatched to the scene.

Ben Ansa said in the aftermath of a chain-reaction crash involving several cars in Menzel Hayet, civil protection and National Guard vehicles were dispatched. Meanwhile, a tractor-trailer car skidded and crashed into one of the civil protection trucks heading to the spot. This caused a multiple-vehicle pileup that involved 25 cars. Four people were killed, including two second lieutenants of the National Guard.
