France Supports Tunisia in Reviewing EU Association Agreement

Paris:France has expressed its support for Tunisia's efforts to review the provisions of its Association Agreement with the European Union. This initiative aims to establish a balanced and fair partnership that responds to current economic transformations.

According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse – English, the support was conveyed during a phone call on Wednesday between Tunisia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, and France's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. The discussion centered on cooperation between Tunisia and France, emphasizing the importance of continuing efforts to expand this partnership based on mutual respect and shared interests.

The ministers also addressed upcoming bilateral and multilateral commitments, highlighting the need for thorough preparations in line with principles of respecting national institutions, sovereignty, and mutual interests. This French position aligns with Tunisia's ongoing efforts to revise the Association Agreement, originally signed on May 17, 1995, and enacted in 1998, to adapt to economic and geopolitical changes and rebalance trade and economic relations between the two countries.

Tunisia's President Kais Saied has reiterated the call for revision of the agreement to make it more balanced and fairer, a stance he emphasized during discussions with German and French counterparts. Tunisian Foreign Minister Nafti has also advocated for a more realistic and fair agreement, considering both parties' interests and priorities while respecting Tunisia's sovereignty and national institutions.
