Front for Referendum created to change political system in Tunisia

Political parties, organisations and national figures announced Monday the creation of a the Front for the Referendum to call for changing the political regime and the electoral law in force.

General Coordinator of Soumoud coalition Houssem Hammi told a press conference the front will call for the organisation of a popular referendum to change the political system in Tunisia.

Conflicts and mis-functioning between the two heads of the executive, the political deadlock and the absence of any solutions to the socio-economic crisis require a change in the political system, he further said.

Hammi said Soumoud will launch, in collaboration with attending national organisations and figures, a citizen petition calling for changing the political system. A tent will be set up as of Monday afternoon in Habib Bourguiba avenue to collect signatures.

“The political regime in place proved to be a failure; Tunisians must have the last word,” he added.

Houssem Hammi said Soumoud Coalition is currently conducting consultations with political actors and national organisations with the goal of expanding this initiative.

National organisations like Soumoud, the Tunisian League for Citizenship, Bardo Sit-in Coordination Moultazimoun Coalition, joined the Front for the Referendum initiative.

The front brings together political parties, including Machrouû Tounes and Beni Watani, and national figures, mainly Chawki Tabib, Kamel Jendoubi and Radhia Jerbi.
