Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak lectures on “Destinerrance” for first time in Tunis International Book Fair

The participation of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak at the 33rd edition of the Tunis International Book Fair 2017 represented an outstanding intellectual opportunity for those who are interested in cultural studies, post-colonial theories and many other critical centre of interests which have been the core subjects in both Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s literary and academic works.

Gayatri Spivak, on Saturday, gave a lecture in Mahmoud Mesaadi’s room on “Destinerrance”.

Spivak, who is also University Professor and Founder of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University, explained the notion of this concept coined by one amongst her influencers the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida.

“Destinerrance is to recognise that in order to live actively in a world that has always aspired to globality not just today through telecommunication we must transform the past into to what Karl Marx called the poetry of the future”, said the contemporary literary theorist and critic Gayatri Spivak .

In the same respect, she added “Destinerrance” featured as a complex word where Derrida strucutred it out of the combination of two words “destination” and ” errance” to designate an idea of a non transmitted message to the right receiver.

In her approach to the subject Professor Spivak, renowned with her translation of Jacques Derrida’s book” De la grammatologie”, published in 1976 under the title of “Grammatology” also said in her lecture that coming to Tunisia is an example of “Destinerrance” since she is in front of public who is unknown to her.

It also designates ”All that which by some telecommunication claims to distant itself it dislodges the correct destinations ”.

”Destinerrance is the re- writing of all the proper addresses in the postal services of history, so as to transform the past into ‘the poetry of the future’, added Spivak.

In a commentary on Jacques Derrida , she articulated that “one must work with what one has received and Derrida is a wonderful thing that I have received I am not someone who follows him I tried to expand his works in different ways and this one of those pieces”.

She extended her lecture to talk about “our cultural divergences and differences in the internal representations of ourselves as a result of the culture we are belonging to it.”

She also noted to her strong ties established with North Africa amongst others through the artwork of the Algerian writer Assia Djebar.

Likewise, with France, Great Britain, the United States, and India through her acquaintance with Derrida, her knowledge about the British colonisation history, and through her profession as a university professor at Colombia’s university in New York city for more than 50 years and ultimately with India for being non white Indian citizen.

The meeting witnessed a great number of attendees mostly were university scholars and students.

Gayatri Spivak was reserved to give any statement to the media.
