Damascus: Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, issued a call for the United States and Russia to uphold the longstanding moratorium on nuclear weapons testing. This plea follows an announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding the potential resumption of nuclear tests, marking what would be the first such tests by the US in over three decades.
According to Ghana News Agency, Wadephul emphasized the importance of all nuclear-armed nations adhering to existing test ban agreements. During a press conference in Damascus, he stressed the need for continued compliance, specifically highlighting North Korea as the only country to have conducted nuclear tests in the 21st century.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump declared the immediate initiation of new nuclear weapons tests, attributing the decision to similar activities by other countries. However, specifics regarding the nature of the tests and the weapons involved have not been disclosed. The last instance of US nuclear testing occurred in the 1990s, raising concerns about a potential new arms race.
In response to Trump’s announcement, Russia indicated a possibility of resuming its nuclear weapons testing. Wadephul speculated that Trump’s decision might be a reaction to Russia’s past use of nuclear-powered systems. He noted that the German government is seeking clarity on the US’s intentions and plans to engage in discussions with American officials.
Wadephul expressed his belief that the announcement does not signify an immediate recommencement of nuclear testing, which would require significant preparation. He called for dialogue to ensure continued commitment to the moratorium and prevent escalation.
