Accra: Ghana's food security situation has become increasingly precarious, with significant portions of the population facing food insecurity. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported in 2022 that Africa had 282 million undernourished people, an increase of 57 million since the COVID-19 pandemic. This underscores the dire food situation across the continent, including Ghana. According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey for 2022 revealed that 49.1 per cent of Ghanaians experienced food insecurity, with rural areas more affected than urban centers. The 2020 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis (CFSVA) for Ghana indicated that 3.6 million people, or 11.7% of the population, were food insecure, with the Northern Region being the hardest hit. Experts attribute these challenges to climate change, with erratic rainfall, droughts, and floods affecting agriculture, especially in regions reliant on rain-fed systems. Th ese climatic changes have led to reduced yields in staple crops like maize, rice, and soybeans, exacerbating food insecurity and driving up food prices. Plato's adage, "Necessity is the mother of invention," rings true as Ghana seeks solutions through climate-resilient crops. These crops, designed to withstand climate change, are critical in countering the adverse effects of unpredictable weather patterns. Climate-resilient crops are bred to endure challenges like rising temperatures and erratic precipitation. Mr. Alex Yeboah of the CSIR-SARI emphasized the importance of these crops in an interview, noting their resilience against climate-related pests and diseases. Crops like sorghum are less affected by pests, offering a sustainable alternative for farmers. CSIR-SARI has developed several drought-resistant crop varieties such as Kpamyo yam, Suhudoo maize, and Favour soybeans. These crops yield more than traditional varieties, with Kpamyo yam producing tubers up to 3.5 kilograms. Farmers can access these varieties at agrochemical shops, improving production and food security. Farmers like Mr. Kulimah Abdul-Majeed and Pastor Joseph Binan have seen significant benefits from adopting climate-resilient crops. Abdul-Majeed increased his maize yield and was able to support his daughter's education, while Binan experienced unprecedented soybean yields. These successes demonstrate the potential of climate-resilient crops to transform agriculture and improve livelihoods. Professor Franklin Nantui Mabe from UDS advocates for prioritizing these crops to achieve food sufficiency and reduce poverty. He calls for increased government support and awareness campaigns to encourage farmers to adopt climate-resilient practices. Recommendations include government-backed loans, funding for agricultural research, and international collaboration for knowledge transfer. Ensuring affordable access to climate-resilient seeds and developing marketing channels are crucial steps towards sustainable agriculture.
