Ghannouchi’s call to Chahed to not run for 2019 presidential election inappropriate (Tabboubi)

Secretary General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Nouredine Taboubi, on Monday, described Ennahdha Movement President Rached Ghannouchi’s call on Prime Minister Youssef Chahed not to run for the 2019 presidential election as “inappropriate.

The 2014 Tunisian constitution stipulates that every Tunisian has the right to run for the presidential election, he insisted in a statement to the media on the sidelines of a working session held with President of the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) Radhia Jerbi.

The election of the President of the Republic falls only on the Tunisian people, he said, adding that no one has the right to block the political ambitions of anyone else.

It is more appropriate today to prioritise crucial security and social economic issues such as the ongoing terrorist threat, corruption and tax evasion, Tabboubi pointed out during this meeting held at the UNFT headquarters.

During an interview with private TV channel Nessma on August 1, Ghannouchi had urged PM Chahed not to run for the 2019 presidential election.
