GIZ grants Euros 7 million for Tunisian Solar Plan

The German co-operation agency “GIZ”, on Monday, granted Tunisia a donation of Euros 7 million (17 million dinars) to finance the project to support the implementation of its solar plan.

Speaking on the signing by Tunisia and Germany of the donation agreement, Minister of Energy, Mining and Renewable Energies, Hela Cheikhrouhou, told reporters this amount will finance the technical and logistical framework for the programme for the production of electricity through renewable energy (2017-2020).

“This donation will be used for the recruitment of German and Tunisian experts to carry out the necessary studies, for developing the legal frameworks and to appeal to services of German design offices”, the minister said, adding that goal is to put in place all the necessary conditions so that the Ministry of Energy can carry out the TSP project and attract as many investors as possible.

Cheikhrouhou said that the projects to be launched under the electric power production programme through renewable energies (2017-2020) will enable the production of 1,000 megawatts of photovoltaic and wind energy (of which 620 Mw for the private sector), with investments ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 million dinars.

In the same context, she pointed out that Tunisia aims to achieve a gradual integration of renewable energies in the energy mix, up to 12% of electricity production by 2020 and 30% by 2030, recalling that this rate does not exceed 3% currently.

Germany’s Ambassador to Tunis, Andreas Reinicke, said “the development of renewable energy is the future for the country”, explaining that this activity will enable it to ensure its energy independence, but also to create new modern jobs and to develop advanced expertise exportable to other countries.
