Tarkwa: Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) has collaborated with Project C. U. R. E, a non-profit organization, to support health directorates in Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley Municipalities with medical equipment and supplies valued at US$793,491.75. The initiative is part of the Foundation’s Expanded Access to Quality Healthcare program, under the Group Legacy Programme.
According to Ghana News Agency, the donation is aimed at equipping public health facilities in the two municipalities to better serve local populations. The donated items include hospital beds, incubators, anesthesia machines, imaging devices, and various consumables such as gloves, syringes, and sterile dressings.
At a presentation ceremony in Tarkwa, Mr. Abdel-Razak Yakubu, Executive Secretary of GFGF, highlighted that a comprehensive needs assessment conducted in 2024 led to the assembly of medical equipment tailored to the requirements of Gold Fields host community facilities. The Foundation covered all related costs, including shipping and customs clearance, amounting to US$95,987.08.
Mr. Yakubu emphasized that the initiative is a significant step towards strengthening primary healthcare, alleviating the burden on frontline staff, and enhancing referral pathways to facilities like the Apinto Government Hospital. The program’s outreach efforts have screened 8,845 people and enrolled or renewed 2,889 individuals under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) between 2023 and the third quarter of 2025.
By integrating outreach with NHIS enrollment, the program promotes affordable and sustainable healthcare access. Mr. Yakubu noted the effort’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly goals 3, 17, 1, and 10, through expanded access to essential health services and reduced healthcare inequalities.
He urged beneficiary facilities to maintain the equipment, advocating for a shift towards a more professional maintenance culture. Mr. Timothy Kwabena Ofori, the Municipal Health Director for Prestea Huni-Valley, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting the first-time acquisition of an incubator for Aboso health center.
Mr. Ofori highlighted the past reliance on referrals to Tarkwa Municipal Hospital and emphasized the new incubator’s potential to enhance case handling capacity. He acknowledged the GFGF’s role in constructing many of the infrastructure in use and plans to work with regional biomedical engineers for equipment maintenance.
Mr. Issah Salifu Taylor, Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency, lauded the Foundation’s consistent support, while Nana Adarkwa Bediako II of the Apinto Divisional Council praised the developmental projects undertaken by Gold Fields and underscored the enduring bond with the community.
