Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Collaborates with Huniso Residents for Community Clean-Up

Huniso: Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) joined forces with the residents of Huniso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality to conduct a clean-up exercise aimed at eliminating filth from the community. The initiative, which commenced at 6:00 am, involved desilting choked gutters, sweeping, and clearing bushy areas.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event was organized to commemorate World Clean-up Day, observed annually on September 20th. The theme for this year was ‘Strive for Five’. During a durbar following the clean-up, Madam Sandra Deladem Woanyah, Project Manager for GFGF, emphasized the importance of routine clean-up activities and the need for periodic education to ensure ongoing commitment to cleanliness.

Madam Woanyah highlighted that the primary goal of the program was to educate the Huniso community on maintaining a clean environment and practicing good sanitation. Furthermore, the Foundation handed over a 40,000-litre Small Town Water Supply System to the community, ensuring access to clean and potable water.

The water facility, constructed at a cost of USD 31,112.24, aims to prevent waterborne diseases and reduce the need for long treks to access water. Mr. Isaac Asante, a Physician Assistant at Samahu health center, provided education on typhoid fever, stressing its prevalence in Huniso and the necessity of preventive measures.

Mr. Kwabena Dramani, Environmental Health Analyst for Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, provided historical context on World Clean-up Day, which began in Estonia in 2008. He urged residents to adhere to sanitation by-laws, warning that non-compliance would lead to prosecution.

Nana Nvidah, Chief of Huniso, expressed gratitude to the GFGF for their support and committed to the regular maintenance of the water facility to prevent any future issues.
