Government must comply with agreement on maintaining commodity prices unchanged (UGTT)

Secretary General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), Noureddine Tabboubi, on Friday, highlighted the need to respect the agreement signed between the labour organisation and the government on maintaining commodity prices unchanged in 2018.

Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of the conference of the general federation of basic education held in Hammamet, Tabboubi added that the union believes that commodities are not limited to pasta, sugar and milk, but encompasses other products that are affected by the state subsidy and whose prices must not rise.

The increase in the price of fuels should not affect public transport fares, Tabboubi cautioned, while emphasising the role of the State which must assume its responsibilities to preserve the purchasing power of the citizens.

The secretary general of the UGTT has called for an immediate increase in allowances for families in need and raising the minimum wage pending the start of wage negotiations in April.

No change has been introduced in the prices of 8 subsidised products including pasta, milk, sugar and vegetable oil, the Ministry of Trade had announced last Wednesday.
