Government pledges to implement environmental decisions in Gabes (Governor)

Governor of Gabes Mongi Thameur reaffirmed the government’s total commitment to halt phosphogypsum pouring through the dismantling of polluting units releasing phosphogypsum and the creation of new industrial units respecting national and international standards in the environmental safety field.

“This choice will make it possible to address the environmental issue in the Gabes region and stop the industrial pollution that has persisted for decades,” he told TAP correspondent in the region.

Mongi Thameur also said that “the government made this choice despite the high cost of this project estimated at more than 3200 MD”.

“Since the holding of the inner cabinet meeting on June 30, the implementation of the first phase of this programme, which will end on December 31, has already started,” he said.

The activists who defended this cause decided on Saturday evening to suspend the sit-in at a meeting held at the southern entrance of the industrial zone of Gabes.

These activists began last Friday a sit-in to demand the closure of the phosphogypsum dump.
