Gov’t urged to focus on economic challenges rather than 2019 elections, says Ennahdha’s Ghannouchi

“The National Unity Government must focus its efforts on economic challenges facing Tunisia and the upcoming elections rather than on the political future of a minister or a prime minister,” said Ennahdha President Rached Ghannouchi.

“The 2019 presidential and legislative elections should not be a focal point for the government; the latter is urged to give full attention to economic challenges and the management of municipal and local elections” set for December, he said in an interview on Monday evening with private TV channel Nessma.

“It is still too early to think about the 2019 elections,” Ghannouchi emphasised. It is also imperative to avoid using economic issues for electoral ends, he said.

Beji CaAd Essebsi’s government in 2011 and Mehdi JomaA’s in 2014 devoted their efforts to organising the elections of the National Constituent Assembly and the presidential and legislative elections respectively, Ghannouchi indicated in this vein.
