Grain output reaches 16.4 million quintals (ministry)

Tunisia’s grain harvest reached 16.4 million quintals this season, the Agriculture Ministry said.

Tunisia’s needs in grain range between 28 and 30 million quintals per year. This means there is need for importation to cover the gap, particularly in soft wheat.

Harvested areas till July 28 reached 802,000 hectares (ha) out of 810 ha, that is 99% of harvestable areas.

They are distributed as follows: 457,000 ha of durum wheat, 60,000 ha of soft wheat, 276,000 ha of barley and 9,200 ha of triticale.
