Grain production expected to rise 7% (Minister of Agriculture)

Grain production is expected to increase 7% in this campaign, compared to the previous, to nearly 16.5 million quintals, acting Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Mohamed Fadhel Kraiem said Saturday.
These include 10.75 million quintals of durum wheat, 1.16 million quintals of soft wheat, 4.3 million quintals of barley and 232,000 quintals of triticale, in addition to the production of 2.3 million quintals of irrigated cereals.
Speaking to reporters on the launch of the harvest campaign Saturday in a typical farm in Mateur, in the governorate of Bizerte, Kraiem said “we expect a good harvest, despite the difficulties faced by farmers, especially in relation to the shortage of fertilizer, especially ammonium nitrate.
President of UTAP, Abdelmajid Ezzar, called to prepare in advance the field crops campaign, by providing all the necessary equipment and resources and to work to improve productivity and yield.
He considered that the production of 15 quintals per hectare is no longer sufficient neither the farmers, nor for the country that imports each year grain worth more than 1600 MD.
