United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended Tunisia on its important role as elected member of the United Nations Security Council and its continued commitment to the principles and objectives of multilateral action and the UN Charter.
Guterres met on Friday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi on the sidelines of the high-level work of the UN General Assembly currently taking place in New York.
He praised the positions of Tunisia on various international issues, which are distinguished by constructive guidelines far from any narrow agenda, said a statement of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
“Tunisia has proven its commitment to democratic principles and will remain an example of wisdom and moderation,” he said, welcoming the existing cooperation between Tunisia and the UN and reiterating his concern to strengthen the support of UN agencies to Tunisia in all areas.
For his part, Jerandi reaffirmed Tunisia’s support for the proposals and recommendations of the report “Our Common Agenda” recently launched by the Secretary-General to strengthen multi-stakeholder efforts to address the challenges facing the world and ensure a better and safer future for future generations.
He also referred to the invitation extended to him by President Kaïs Saïed to participate in the 18th Summit of the Francophonie to be held on December 20 and 21 in Djerba.
The theme of the Summit, on the digital for development, opens wide horizons to support peace and security in the world and strengthen solidarity and mutual assistance between peoples, which responds perfectly to the recommendations of the report on the common agenda, he said.
The meeting also addressed the main developments in the region and the world, including the situation in Libya. In this regard, Guterres reiterated his thanks and consideration to Tunisia for the facilities provided to the work of the UN mission in Libya and for its efforts to boost the political process in the country.
In this context, Jerandi reaffirmed Tunisia’s determination to continue supporting the political process in Libya in view of the historical ties of brotherhood that unite the two countries “far from any self-interested calculation and only in the service of peace, security and stability in Libya and the region.
