Hamma Hammami: PF’s municipal election campaign meets several obstacles

Popular Front spokesman Hamma Hammami said on Monday that the Front’s election campaign has faced a number of obstacles since its inception, saying it is a “dangerous issue that threatens the electoral process”.

Speaking at a press conference, Hamma Hammami pointed to regional electoral authorities (IRIEs), which he said refused to accept donation records, on the one hand, and invalidated on the other hand, certain terms of electoral manifestos such as “nepotism and bribes”, “coalition failure in government” and “martyrdom”. What some IRIEs have validated others have invalidated it, he said.

For Hamma Hammami, the remarks made by the PF in the electoral manifestos are in no way contrary to the electoral law and do not harm opponents. The PF will not go back on its comments and refuses to receive orders in this direction, he said, criticising the fact that it is associated with a campaign that damages the image of Tunisia abroad.

The PF, he insisted, does not intend to abide by these political requirements and will not allow “certain political parties” to manipulate the electoral campaign. “The Front will continue to distribute its election manifestos, he said, judging that the attitude of some IRIE recalls the old practices of the Ministry of the Interior under Ben Ali.

For him, the electoral authority is not playing its role. It is bound to respect the principle of neutrality and equality of opportunity between all candidates.
