Head of State calls to reassess method of protection provided to Hamma Hammami

President Beji CaAd Essebsi, on Tuesday, met with a delegation consisting of President of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women Monia Ben Jemii, representative of the International Federation of Human Rights, Khadija Cherif, President of the Tunisian Human Rights League Jamel Moslem and President of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights Abderrahmane Hedhili.

The meeting fits into an initiative launched by civil society to monitor the situation of Radhia Nasraoui (spouse of Popular Front spokesman Hamma Hammami), who has been on a hunger strike for more than three weeks, Monia Ben Jemii said at the end of the meeting.

She added that the Head of State again expressed the concern to guarantee the safety of all citizens and asserted that the method of protection provided to Hamma Hammami will be reassessed by the Interior Ministry.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the general situation in the country, said a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.

President of the National Authority for the Prevention of Torture (INPT), Radhia Nasraoui has been on a hunger strike for more than three weeks due to the lifting of the close protection provided by the Presidential Guard to her husband Hamma Hammami.

Nasraoui had told TAP on Wednesday (July 19) she was awaiting a conclusive answer from the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister on the safety of her husband.

The Presidency of the Republic had granted close protection to the spokesman for the FP in the wake of the assassination of martyr Chokri Belaid on February 6, 2013. That protection was provided, for more than four years, by the presidential guard in all his movements and in front of his home.
