Head of State Chairs Swearing-In Ceremony of National Penal Reconciliation Commission Members

Tunis: President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed chaired, at Carthage Palace, the swearing-in ceremony of the members of the National Penal Reconciliation Commission. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the appointment of the commission's members follows the designation of judicial magistrate Ali Abbes (third grade) as its head, under Decree No. 2026-109 of June 8, 2026. In a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic, the Head of State reiterated that 'accountability is a legitimate and inalienable demand of the Tunisian people.' President Saïed emphasized that no funds would be allowed to be squandered, highlighting the appointment of the commission's members as a renewed opportunity to relaunch the penal reconciliation process. He noted that the previous efforts of the commission were hindered, if not deliberately sabotaged. The President also mentioned that the initiative provides a new chance for those concerned, including incarcerated individuals or those residing abroad, to engage in penal reconciliation. He condemned any manipulation or delaying tactics, asserting the importance of pursuing the legitimate demands of the Tunisian people, underscoring that no one is above the law and accountability. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted in accordance with the decree-law that established the commission in 2022.
