Head of State meets with OIC Secretary-General

President Beji Caid Essebsi, met Tuesday at the Carthage Palace, with Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen, currently visiting Tunisia to participate in the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Islamic Development Bank Group, which is taking place in Tunis on April 1-5.

The Head of State voiced consideration for the choice of Tunisia to host the meeting of the Islamic Development Bank, commending the development projects scheduled in Tunisia by the bank in several regions of the country.

“Such projects are likely to make life easier for citizens and achieve economic and social development in these regions,” he said.

Caid Essebsi also praised the cooperation between Tunisia and the OIC, reaffirming Tunisia’s support for the organisation and its activities in the service of joint Islamic action.

“Tunisia is willing to further strengthen cooperation between the two sides and serve the issues of the Islamic world,” he said.

Besides, the Head of State spoked of the rapid and deep changes observed in the region and the difficulty of the juncture, calling for a rapid response to this situation through dialogue.

For his part, OIC Secretary-General emphasised the importance of Tunisia’s role for the organisation as a founding country, highlighting its effective participation in issues of the Islamic world and the promotion of joint Islamic action.

“The difficult situation in the region requires the combined efforts of the member countries to face the various challenges, including political crises, development issues, the fight against terrorism and extremism and the dissemination of tolerance and moderation values, “he said.

In another connection, the OIC official praised the wisdom with which is directed the political life in Tunisia, through dialogue, estimating that Tunisia begins to find the way towards stability and development.

“The OIC is willing to further cooperate with Tunisia in several areas,” he asserted.

According to the S-G, the OIC plans to hold conferences in Tunisia on the investment sector, particularly in the private sector, before the end of this year.

Several issues relating to the region, including the development of the Libyan issue were also discussed during the talk.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Khemaies Jhinaoui.
