Hearing of Chafik Jerraya postponed until September 7 (defence lawyers)

At the request of the defense, the military investigating judge has decided to postpone the hearing of Chafik Jerraya until September 7, said Faycal Jadlaoui, a member of the defense group.

“We have asked for the postponement of the hearing to have time to consult the entire file,” he said, adding the defense group has not looked into some important documents related to the case.

He added that the defence lawyers have called for “a psychiatric consultation for their client”, pointing out that Chafik Jerraya has a “psychiatric medical record since 1992” and that “in view of his present state he must see a psychiatrist.”

He said the investigating judge dismissed the request.

At the end of last May, the Tunisian military prosecutor’s office decided to investigate Chafik Jaraya and people which the investigation revealed their involvement “for harming the security of the state, treason and intelligence with a foreign power in time of peace”.

According to the Military prosecutor’s office, the investigation was opened following complaints to that office accusing Chafik Jaraya of committing “acts likely to undermine the security of the State”.

A campaign of arrests, launched by the Chahed government on May 23 has affected several people suspected of corruption, smuggling and involvement in networks of the informal economy.

Decisions to place them under house arrest were made on the basis of “indications of their involvement in offences that could threaten dangerously security and public order”, the Interior Ministry said.
