High alert phase ends in Jendouba (Civil protection)

The forest fires that have multiplied during the past four days in Jendouba and damaged several hundreds of hectares in the delegations of Ain Draham, Fernana, Balta-Bou Aouane, Ghardimaou and Tabarka were mostly brought under control thanks to the strong mobilisation of the civil protection, forest services, National Army and hundreds of citizens, Regional Director of the Civil Protection Colonel Mounir Rayabi told TAP.

Interventions are ongoing in some areas of the fires in mountains and forests in Tabarka, Ain Draham, Fernana and several homes in localities bordering Faj El Kahla, Ourahnia, Ain Salem, Sidi Mohamed, Bouterfes, Allaoua and Rouaisia.

The Regional Commissioner for Agricultural Development in Jendouba said the fires have affected more than 400 hectares. Some of the affected areas have never seen such successive fires since more than half a century.

The affected forests represent a rich biodiversity, the regeneration of which will require about fifty years.
