Higher Committee Reviews Key Energy and Industrial Projects’ Progress

Kasbah: The Higher Committee for Accelerating the Implementation of Public Projects convened at the Government Palace in Kasbah under the leadership of Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri. The meeting focused on evaluating the progress of two significant initiatives: the Tunisia-Italy electricity interconnection (ELMED) and the Mdhilla 2 triple super phosphate (TSP) plant. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, Prime Minister Zenzri highlighted the government's commitment, guided by President Kais Saied, to expedite the completion of ongoing public projects while also initiating new ones. The aim is to ensure these projects are completed efficiently and on schedule, thereby boosting the national economy, improving the investment climate, creating employment opportunities, and advancing social justice and balanced development in line with public expectations. The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of overcoming challenges and finding quick solutions through diligent supervision at various levels of government. She stressed accountability for any negligence by individuals involved in project execution or supervision. During the meeting, details of the ELMED project were presented. This project entails creating a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine link between Sicily, Italy, and the Nabeul governorate in Tunisia. The setup includes conversion stations in Mlaabi, Menzel Temime, and Partanna, Sicily, along with a 200 km subsea cable at depths of up to 800 meters, with a capacity of 600 MW and voltage of 500 kV DC. Landing points in Kelibia and Sicily will connect through underground cables, supplemented by a continuous communication and monitoring system. This project is a pivotal step in bolstering electricity exchanges across the Mediterranean, enhancing Tunisia's power infrastructure, and promoting renewable energy initiatives. Prime Minister Zenzri underscored the economic and strategic significance of this interconnection, which is aligned with Tunisia's renewable energy strategy to improve national energy security. Following President Saied's directives, the strategy targets producing 35% of electricity from renewable resources by 2030, thus fostering energy independence. The meeting also evaluated the Mdhilla 2 TSP plant project, which the Prime Minister described as essential for rejuvenating the phosphate sector, transforming it into a high value-added industrial force, increasing exports, and creating jobs. The Mdhilla 2 plant is anticipated to significantly impact the economy by leveraging natural resources for growth. In her closing remarks, the Prime Minister stressed the urgency of accelerating both projects' implementation, supported by rigorous monitoring to ensure timely progress.
