This conference, which demonstrates the interest of the House of Advisors in the issue of sovereignty and food security, comes in line with the royal guidelines contained in the speech addressed by HM King Mohammed VI to the Parliament on the occasion of the opening of the 1st session of the 1st legislative year of the 11th legislature.
In His speech, the Sovereign insisted “on the need to set up an integrated national system to manage the strategic reserve stock of essential goods and products, especially in the areas of food, health and energy.”
This meeting was an opportunity to highlight the best practices to strengthen food production mechanisms and management of strategic stocks.
Participants in this symposium reviewed the developments related to the adaptation of agricultural production to the challenges of climate change and the measures to be taken to reshape global supply chains to ensure a fair and equitable food supply.
Speaking on this occasion, the President of the House of Advisors, Naama Mayara stressed that this symposium is part of the dynamics set in motion by the Upper House, which attaches great importance to the subject of food security, noting that this issue is one of the key axes of the strategic vision at legislative and the parallel diplomacy levels.
This conference comes in a difficult and complex global context that raises the issue of sovereignty and food security as a priority at the national and international levels, he observed.
For his part, FAO Representative in Morocco, Jean Senahoun, said that the world is facing an unprecedented level of food insecurity, noting that the latest UN report revealed that the number of people affected by hunger in the world has increased to 828 million in 2021, i.e. an increase of 150 million since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
For his part, the speaker of the Andean Parliament, Fidel Espinoza Sandoval, emphasized the importance of the issue of food sovereignty for the South American countries, mainly because nutrition is an essential and vital component of human life.
The Andean Parliament has already taken several initiatives to ensure food security and the quality of foodstuffs in the region, he stressed.
Participants in this international symposium will examine three themes namely, “the international strategies to ensure the recovery of the production system and food chains in the face of climate change and crises of the new global context,” “the role of parliaments in the development of new laws to strengthen food security,” and “sovereignty and food security in Morocco between improving productivity and strategic management of products.”
