HPR schedules plenary session on CentreWest governorates in April

On a visit Friday in the Kairoun governorate, the parliamentary commission of regional development announced that a plenary session on CentreWest governorates will be held in April.

According to a House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) press release, this plenary session should issue a set of recommendations to be submitted to the government for implementation. The HPR will follow up the implementation of these recommendations.

During this visit, a working session was held at the Kairouan governorate headquarters, in presence of the Kairouan deputies, several regional and local officials and civil society representatives.

According to the commission members, these visits are part of the HPR’s supervisory role.

“The parliamentary commission of regional development will be a pressure mechanism on the government to push it to execute the decisions of regional cabinets,” they promised.

“These visits will help foster co-ordination between regional and central authorities to unblock several outstanding projects,” they added.

While denouncing the dilapidated infrastructure and lack of an industrial zone in the region, the MPs stressed the need to speed up the process of building a motorway between Kairouan and Sousse, the project to create the Metbasta II industrial zone and connect the government to the rail network via Ennfidha.

They also called for fitting out the railway between Kairouan and Sousse and find radical solutions to the recurrent cut of drinking water.

Present at the working session, the commissioner for regional development reported 24 projects in difficulty related notably to infrastructure, production and human resources.
