Tunis: The candidacy file for the Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddima to be inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register is currently under evaluation. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, this joint candidacy was submitted by Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and Turkey for the 2026-2027 cycle of the Memory of the World Programme. The Permanent Delegation of Tunisia to UNESCO stated that the file is being examined by expert committees accredited by the organisation. The elements of documentary heritage to be inscribed on the Memory of the World Register will be announced during the meeting of the UNESCO Executive Board in spring 2027. The Delegation highlighted the exceptional historical and scientific value of the Muqaddima of Ibn Khaldun, a scholar of Tunisian origin whose work has gained worldwide recognition. It was noted that Tunisia had initiated the process of coordinating the preparation of its candidacy file for inscription on the Memory of the World Register a year ago, in partnership with Algeria, Egypt, and Turkey. This update to the candidacy process follows years of effort, with preparations having begun in 2017 before being temporarily interrupted. Abdelhamid Larguèche, General Coordinator of the International Committee for the Support of the Inscription of the Muqaddima on the Memory of the World Register, indicated previously to TAP that the joint candidacy focuses on the multinational nature of the manuscript heritage associated with Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddima, as he wrote his work in stages during his travels between Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt. Copies and manuscripts exist in several countries, including Turkey. To support the candidacy file and present the historical and scientific journey of Ibn Khaldoun, the Committee for the Support of the Inscription of the Muqaddima organised a cultural visit in the medina of Tunis in April 2024, under the title "On the Footsteps of Ibn Khaldun". This included sites such as the municipal library of Tunis "Dar Ben Achour", the El Khaldounia library, Ibn Khaldon's birthplace, and the Quranic school where he received his education during childhood.
