“If you want to succeed, think about putting in place a positive Tunisia” (Jacques Attali)

“If you want to succeed, think about putting in place a positive Tunisia, a country that works for the interest of the next generations and why not to establish a plan for Tunisia 2030 in which you will list all the strategies and actions to serve this purpose.

This was the all launched to Tunisians by Jacques Attali, French economist, writer, senior official and former president Francois Mitterand’s adviser.

Speaking Monday at an international economic conference on the theme Development of the world economy and the place of Tunisia”, Attali added that “in an uncertain context where the probability of establishing a planetary state governed by the rule of law is still difficult to predict, what makes the relative place of a country, it is first of all its capacity to establish a stable state governed by the rule of law, to know its assets (geographical position, history, natural resources …) and to be positive”.

He pointed out that “a positive economy is an economy that works for the benefit of future generations. A country can only advance if it is positive; this mean that each of the decisions it makes must serve the interest of future generations. The more positive a country is, the higher its standard of living, the more resistant it is to crises and the more general well-being is there.

According to the French economist, Tunisia has a multitude of assets, including its direct contact with the sea. “Turn to the sea, he called. The sea as a strategic issue, as a source of history but also of the future. Your deep-water port is an absolutely strategic issue. You must do it in the best, the quickest and the greatest possible way. “

He added: “the question for you will be what will be the ports that will link Europe to Africa in the future. Is it Tangier only? Or will there be a Tunisian port that will also provide this link? “

Another asset of Tunisia, according to Attali, is Africa. He recommended “turning south. It is not normal that you are not yet a member of COMESA.

It is not normal either that you have not developed enough your presence (banks, institutions, airline …) in a market of 2 billion and a half inhabitants in 30 years.

Tunisia’s advantages also include, according to Francois Mitterrand’s former advisor, “its belonging to the French-speaking world, but also to the Arab world, whose potential for development is enormous and for which Tunisia could embody the desire for modernity”.

The French economist also spoke of Tunisia’s European dimension, stressing that “you are part of Europe in a way.

The destiny of Europe depends on what is happening in Africa, and therefore what is happening in Tunisia. Helping Tunisia is not an altruistic act but a rational act or even a selfish act.

The development of Tunisia is the condition for maintaining Western society; Tunisia being one of the points of passage for huge African potentials.

“The Tunisian experience, if it succeeds, will be a sign of hope for the whole world. If it fails, it will be a sign of disaster,” he stressed.
