Illegal border crossing attempt thwarted (IM)

An attempt to cross the sea borders illegally was thwarted on Monday night by the Sfax coast guards, arresting 66 persons, according to an Interior Ministry (IM) press release Tuesday.

The 66 illegal migrants were aboard a 14-meter-long fishing boat with a transport capacity of no more than 20 persons. It was intercepted 14 miles from the Sfax fishing port.

According to the ministry, were on board the boat 59 Tunisians and 7 Maghreb individuals aged between 14 and 48 years and coming from Kairouan, Zarzis and Sfax. One of them is the subject of three notices of research for misappropriation and illegal sale of alcoholic beverages.

A judicial information has been opened against them for unlawful crossing of maritime borders, the same source said.

A car used to transport passengers worth 40 thousand dinars and Euros 1820 in the possession of one of the passengers were seized.
