President Beji Caid Essebsi received Monday European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos who is currently in Tunisia to participate in the 2nd meeting of the Interior Ministers of the Contact Group on The Mediterranean Migration Route.

Security and migration are a priority for Europe which is constantly endeavouring to boost co-operation with the region’s countries to find efficient solutions to help address the illegal migration issue in the Mediterranean basin, the European commissioner was quoted as saying in a Presidency of the Republic press release.

In this regard, he insisted on the need to settle the Libyan crisis to minimize its impact on the flow of refugees towards Europe.

Avramopoulos pointed out in this regard, the importance to develop co-operation with Tunisia, noting that proposals of co-operation axes are under study.

Tunisia, he explained, can play a key role in matters of migration by establishing a developed partnership to encourage legal migration and facilitate the movement of people.

The President of the Republic for his part, said that addressing the migration issue should be done according to a multidisciplinary approach while taking into account development and job creation.

He called on Europe to further support Sub-Saharan and southern Mediterranean countries, help them achieve their development goals and improve their populations’ living conditions so as to insure security and stability in the region.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui.
