Illegal migration attempt to Italy thwarted off Kerkennah (Interior)

An attempt to illegally cross to Italy aboard a ship was thwarted on Friday off Kerkennah island.

The 12-meter-long boat was carrying 76 migrants aging between 14 and 30, most of them Tunisians, with the exception of three North Africans, according to an Interior Ministry press release.

During the arrest, the captain of the boat tried to damage the coastguard ship with a knife, causing cracks in it, said the same source, specifying that a passenger verbally assaulted the National Guards by calling them “taghout” (tyrants).

Two other passengers threw themselves into the sea before being rescued by the National Guards, the press release pointed out.
