Implementation of alternative strategy to guarantee social-economic and cultural rights, focus of ESCR-Net’s meeting in Tunis

Works of the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net)’s meeting, February 7-10 in Tunis kicked off on Wednesday in the presence of representatives of 15 countries that will review the implementation of an alternative strategy to the world capitalist system.

The capitalist system promoted social injustices and continues to exclude some 2 billion individuals of the economic cycle by placing most of the global wealth at the disposal of only 20% of countries, President of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) and an ESCR-Net member Massoud Romdhani said.

The alternative strategy will further enshrine the populations’ social-economic and cultural rights, he added.

Taking the floor, Director-General of the Palestinian Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center (DWRC) Hassan Barghouthi noted that the FTDES’ experience is very interesting and lessons must be drown from it at the international and Arab levels so as to implement economic and social policies alternative to capitalism. He further called for creating an Arab social and economic forum.

The ESCR-Net connects over 280 NGOs, social movements and advocates across more than 75 countries to build a global movement to make human rights and social justice a reality for all.
