Increased efforts needed to improve rural women’s situation, Laabid tells CSW62

Minister of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs Neziha Laabidi Tuesday urged increased global efforts to improve the situation of rural women and strengthen their empowerment.

She also said, as she addressed Tuesday the sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (March 12-23), there is need for better coordination among lenders to contribute to the creation of an environment that helps women move from the status of programme and financing recipients to that of full players.

Inclusive approaches and sectoral initiatives that take gender equality into account when it comes to commercial agreements and trade policies need to be enhanced through the meetings of international financial institutions and international and regional organisations as well as business fora such as Davos.

Laabidi reviewed national indicators that reflect the difficult situation of rural women: the maternal mortality rate is high in rural areas inland for only 10.5% of rural women receive social protection; additionally, 19.3% of rural women have a source of income against 55.9% for men.

The Minister said Tunisia worked out a national strategy for rural women’s social and economic empowerment, one that is built around five main thrusts.

The CSW62 is focusing on the theme “Challenges and Opportunities in Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls.”
