Industrial production index down 0.9% in 1st nine months of 2017 (INS)

The industrial production index fell by 0.9% in the 1st nine months of 2017, compared with 0.2% in the same period in 2016, according to the latest statistics posted on the National Institute of Statistics (INS) website.

This decrease is mainly due to the decline in the production of the non-metallic mineral product manufacturing sector (5.6%) following the decline in cement production.

Production in the energy extraction sector also dropped by 13.4%, mainly due to the decline in crude oil production.

On the other hand, production increased in the non-energy extraction sector by 20%, following the rise in crude phosphate production (3.546 million tonnes in the 1st nine months of 2017) against 2.531 million tonnes in 2016.

Industrial production also recorded an increase by 2.9% in the mechanical and electrical industries, by 4.1% in rubber and plastics and 2.8% in petroleum refining.

During the third quarter of 2017, the rise in production was less significant in the industry as a whole (+0.2%), while remaining at the same level as in the same period in 2016. This rise is mainly due to the increase by 38%, in the non-energy product extraction sector, as the crude phosphate production edged up to 1.178 million tonnes compared to 7 million tonnes last year.

In another connection, industrial production grew by 3% in mechanical and electrical industries, 3.6% in agro-food and 8.1% in petroleum refining, 6.8% in chemicals, 2.3% in manufacturing non-metallic mineral products due to the increase in cement production, and by 1.1% in the textile, clothing and leather industry.

On the other hand, the output of the energy product extraction sector fell by 22.9%, mainly as a result of the weakening of crude oil production.

In September 2017, industrial production climbed up by 0.2% year on year (5% in August 2017), due to the increase in the chemical (+ 3.5%), mechanical and electrical industries (+1, 4%), agro-food (+ 2.1%) and rubber and plastics (6.1%).

Production also experienced growth in the non-energy extraction sector by 27.2%, following the increase in crude phosphate production to 357 thousand tonnes in September 2017 compared with 209 thousand tonnes in the same period last year.

In addition, production dropped by 4% in the energy product extraction sector.
