Inflation Eases to 5.1% in July 2026

Tunis: The annual inflation rate eased to 5.1% in July 2026, according to the Consumer Price Index for July 2026 published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the rate declined by 0.2% compared with June 2026, mainly due to slower price growth in the Food and Beverages category, where inflation fell to 6.6% in July from 7.1% in June. This was partially offset by faster price increases in the Tobacco category, which rose to 1.3% from 1%, and in Restaurants and Hotels, where inflation accelerated to 6.5% from 6.3%.

On an annual basis, prices in the Food and Beverages category increased by 6.6%, driven mainly by a 16.7% rise in lamb prices, a 13.8% increase in fresh fruit prices, a 13.7% increase in beef prices, a 12.5% rise in poultry prices, and an 11.6% increase in fresh fish prices. By contrast, prices of edible oils fell by 4.9%, while egg prices declined by 3.8%.

Prices of manufactured goods increased by 4.7% year-on-year, reflecting a 9.1% rise in clothing and footwear prices and a 4.7% increase in household maintenance products. Service prices rose by 4.3% over the same period, mainly due to a 16.6% increase in accommodation service prices.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, eased to 4.8% in July 2026 from 4.9% in June. Prices of non-regulated products increased by 6.2% year-on-year, while regulated products recorded a more moderate increase of 1.1%. Among food products, prices of non-regulated items rose by 7.4%, compared with just 0.2% for regulated food products.

According to the INS, Manufactured Goods and Services made the largest contributions to overall inflation, accounting for 1.8 and 1.4%, respectively. By pricing regime, non-regulated non-food products and non-regulated food products were the largest contributors to inflation, accounting for 3 and 1.9%, respectively.
