Inflation rate widens to 7.6% in March 2018

The consumer inflation rate widened to 7.6% in March 2018, against 7.1% in February and 6.9% in January 2018.

The National Institute of Statistics (INS) explained this increase by the rise in food prices (8.7% against 7.7%) and clothing and footwear prices (8% against 6.9%).

Rising food prices:

The increase in food prices by 7.7% in March against 8% in February taking into account the year-on-year slide, fruit prices rose by 23.4%, vegetable oils by 13%, fish (10.4%) and meat (9.7%) and non-fresh food products (7%).

The rise in prices also affected transport (10%) compared to February, due to the increase in car prices by 16.6% and spare parts by 10%.

Housing and energy prices climbed up by 4.4% year-on-year due to higher prices for rent services by 4.5%, and prices for home maintenance and repair products and more particularly building materials by 15.3%.

The INS pointed out that the underlying inflation rate (excluding energy, food and beverages) increased in March by 7.4% against 7% in February.

Prices of free products rose by 8.5%, year-on-year, compared with 4.5% for the prices of regulated products, with a year-on-year rate of free products reaching 9.9% compared to 2.2% % for subsidized food products.

Prices rise by 0.7% in March compared to February:

The consumer price index was up by 0.7% in March compared with the month before, following a 0.1% decline in February.

According to the INS, this increase is mainly due to changes in the prices of food products and the prices of the clothing and transport groups.

The Food and Beverage Group Price Index increased by 1.1% compared with February due to higher prices for poultry (4.2%), fresh fruit (2.5%) and meat (2.4%).

Clothing and footwear prices rose by 0.9% against a 3.7% decline in February 2018, due to the end of the winter sales season. Thus, the prices of clothing items increase by 1.0% and shoes by 0.7%.

The rate of increase in vehicle prices (1.2%) and the prices of expenditures related to their use (0.2%) contributed to the 0.8% change in the transportation price index in March.

The prices for miscellaneous goods and services increased by 0.8% due to higher prices for personal care products and services by 1.1%.

Restaurant and hotel services also saw their prices rise by 0.6%, as restaurant and cafe services prices rose by 0.5% and hotel service prices by 0.9%. .
