Inner Cabinet Meeting looks at STEG and SONEDE programmes in summer season

Follow-up of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) and the National Society for Water Exploitation and Distribution (SONEDE) programmes in the summer season was at the centre of an inner Cabinet meeting (ICM) Thursday under chairmanship of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, in view of the heat wave recorded in the last days.

According to a Prime Ministry press release, the Cabinet pointed out the need to rationalise consumption in private and public administrations and structures and step up efforts to carry out all programmes and periodically evaluate the situation.

The Cabinet discussed the furtherance state of the implementation of what has been decided to prevent the projected shortage of drinking water in cities and rural regions and to monitor the progress of certain projects launched by SONEDE and whose achievement rate reached 80%.

Youssef Chahed stressed the need to speed up implementation of the water desalination project in Sousse, “Kalaa dam and the Djerba plant projects.

Chahed also took note of the hydraulic groups’ file, giving instructions to complete the new water resources management law as soon as possible to be submitted then to the House of People’s Representatives.

The PM called for doubling efforts at the level of regional structures and districts to ensure the proper management of water resources and alleviate water overconsumption.

He underlined the need to increase awareness-raising operations to ensure the proper use of electricity and rationalise the use of air-conditioning equipment.
