Interior Ministry for adoption of draft law on repression of attacks against security forces carrying arms (Hedi Majdoub)

Interior Minister Hedi Majdoub stressed on Wednesday the Ministry’s commitment to the adoption of the draft law on the repression of attacks on armed forces.

The minister spoke on Wednesday at the ministry’s headquarters in Tunis, during his participation in the National Road Safety Council.

In a press statement, Majdoub said that “the adoption of this bill has now become a pressing necessity for the protection of security who are exposed to continuous aggression.”

In this context, he asserted the ministry’s willingness to engage in dialogue with civil society and human rights organisations who refuse to accept this bill, which they believe has several shortcomings and undermines the principles human rights.

President of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) Neji Bghouri called Wednesday at a press conference organised by the union to withdraw the draft law on the repression of attacks against armed forces and the final annulment of its examination by parliament because “it constitutes a threat to the freedom of expression”.

On 14 July, civil society organisations had called for the withdrawal of the draft law in a joint statement, considering that submitting the draft for discussion to the House of People’s Representatives “constitutes an aggression and Interference with freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate “.

According to them, the provisions laid down in the draft law “lay the foundations for a dictatorship and a police state” which raise fears of repression in the press.

The National Union of Internal Security Forces organised a rally in front of the headquarters of the HPR last June, calling for the adoption of the draft law on the repression of attacks on forces to ensure the safety of civil servants in this sector both on and off duty.
