International accreditation essential for development of higher education

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Slim Khalbous said Friday that the international accreditation of Tunisian universities is essential to the development of higher education.

Speaking at a conference on the opening of Tunisian universities to their international environment, the minister called on university presidents to do more to improve the ranking of their institutions internationally.

He said that the international ranking of Tunisian universities has improved over the last few years, indicating that the universities of Tunis El Manar and Sfax have entered the rankings of the 1,000 best universities in the world.

The Tunis El Manar University is ranked 9th in Africa and among the top 800 (ranks 703) universities worldwide, for 2017-2018 according to the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP). It an increase of 327 places worldwide.

As for the University of Sfax, it ranks 752 internationally.

He also stressed that his department is currently working to attract more African students to Tunisian universities, stating that the goal is to increase the rate of these students in Tunisian institutions by 2.5 to 5%.

The minister announced, in an interview Thursday with TAP, that he will visit Abidjan in Ivory Coast to organise a Tunisian university show. The goal is to attract Ivorian students to Tunisian universities.
