An investigation has been initiated against president of Ennahdha movement Rached Ghannouchi over «suspected treason and espionage,» announced Ridha Raddaoui, member of the defence lawyers committee for martyrs Chokri Belaïd and Mohamed Brahmi.
This investigation takes place after a complaint filed by the committee to the military court on suspicions of «treason and espionage,» he added.
«For the financial side of that complaint, we were informed that it is currently under the jurisdiction of the sub-directorate of financial crimes.”
Raddaoui was speaking at a rally held by the defence lawyers’ committee outside the headquarters of the Supreme Judicial Council (CSM) Thursday.
Demonstrators chanted slogans urging “the President of the Republic to intervene to open the case of political assassinations. They called to hold judges and criminals accountable for their actions.
Ghannouchi will be heard as a defendant regarding the «alleged receipt of funds from the Cabinet of Qatar, the existence of which has been proven through supporting documents, verified by the defence lawyers committee.”
Cases of money laundering are under the jurisdiction of the court of first instance while those related to treason and espionage are under the jurisdiction of the military court.
On another level, owners of some media outlets have urged the defence lawyers to «not put more pressure” on telecom company “Ooredoo,» saying the company’s CEO Mansoor Rashid al-Khater has threatened to file a complaint against them.
“Al-Khater is an agent of the Qatari intelligence service and a close associate to the Emir of Qatar,» Raddaoui pointed out. «He is entrusted with the mission of buying up certain media through granting sponsorship in exchange for their allegiance to Ennhadha movement. He is also in charge of defending and protecting Rached Ghannouchi,» said the defence lawyers committee.
Koutheir Bouallegue, a committee member said the defence lawyers will be heard next Monday on «the case of intelligence and espionage on behalf of a foreign party.”
Bouallegue argued that the Supreme Judicial Council is responsible for the choice of judges who knowingly concealed the «apparatus of Ennahdha movement» and destroyed evidence on political assassinations.
«We have given the council hundreds of documents proving unequivocally the involvement of Ennahdha president and its leaders in political assassinations and money laundering,» he asserted.
