Irregular migration: Interior Minister calls for Arab mobilisation in favour of Tunisia’s “sovereign position”

Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine expressed the desire to see the Arab Interior Ministers’ Council take a supportive position and show solidarity with Tunisia amid the “unprecedented and unjustified” orchestrated campaign against it, following its “sovereign position” on the issue of irregular migration.

Speaking at the opening of the 40th session of the meeting of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, held in Tunis, the Interior Minister stressed that Tunisia has always supported a comprehensive and unified approach to regular migration, one that is based on respect of human rights and combining development, security and justice.

Charfeddine underlined that the event is held at turbulent times regionally and internationally as the Arab region is facing several challenges, namely security and development.

He added that this session will be an opportunity to share views and develop common positions on relevant issues, particularly security threats and the challenges posed by the growing number of irregular migrants transiting to the European area through some Arab countries.

The minister affirmed that Tunisia embraced an approach that promotes dialogue, cooperation and partnership with Arab and Western countries as well as with international and regional organisations and bodies, adding that Tunisia is determined to contribute to international efforts on achieving security, stability and peace in the world.

The Interior Minister stressed that Tunisia welcomes everyone and embraces the principles of moderation, freedom, democracy and the rule of law, while being committed to the culture of recognition and acceptance of others under international legislation and pacts.

“Today, we are meeting in Tunisia to look for ways to boost cooperation so as to successfully uphold the duty of preserving the security of our homelands, a necessary prerequisite to guarantee security and dignity,» the Interior Minister pointed out.
