Kadjebi: The Iseguri Initiative, a non-governmental organization based in Kadjebi, has unveiled a new educational program aimed at addressing the challenges of teenage pregnancy and early forced child marriage among students, particularly young girls, in the Oti Region. The program also emphasizes the importance of sexual education at home and encourages open communication between parents and daughters. According to Ghana News Agency, the Iseguri Initiative, in collaboration with 13 smallholder women farmer groups, is not only focusing on educating stakeholders about the repercussions of teenage pregnancy and early marriages but is also promoting climate-smart agricultural practices and advocacy programs to end child labor in cocoa-growing regions. During a session at Dapaa-Kukurantumi Primary and Junior High School, Madam Jemima Etse, Programme Focal Person for the Iseguri Initiative, highlighted the critical role of education in empowering girls to overcome these societal challenges. Madam Etse emphasized the need for parents to provide their children with basic necessities to prevent them from falling prey to predators who might lure them with gifts. She also called on parents to foster a safe space for discussing sensitive issues with their daughters. Mr. Raymond Senanu Buami, Programme Coordinator of the Iseguri Initiative, pointed out the negative influence of technology and social media on young people. He advocated for parental control over children's internet access and stressed the importance of educational investments over materialistic gifts like smartphones. Additionally, Madam Melody Benuyena, a staff member at St. Mary Theresa Catholic Hospital and an Iseguri Initiative member, discussed the health risks associated with teenage pregnancies. These include low birth weight, premature births, and increased risk of infant mortality, along with sexually transmitted infections and pelvic inflammatory diseases among adolescent girls. She underscored the importance of reproductive and sexual health educ ation to mitigate these risks. The initiative's comprehensive approach aims to educate and empower young girls, enabling them to pursue higher education and professional careers, thereby breaking the cycle of early marriages and teenage pregnancies in the region.
