ISIE president: some 1,700 observers to be mobilised to control electoral campaign of next municipal elections

“Some 1,700 observers will be deployed in all constituencies to control the conduct of the election campaign of the next municipal elections,” announced Monday President of the Independent Higher Authority for Elections (ISIE), Mohamed Tlili Mansri.

“Supervised by 350 local coordinators, these observers will mainly control the activities of the various lists running for the next municipal elections and the mode of their financing,” he said during a meeting with the head of the list of the District of Greater Tunis for municipal elections and representatives of civil society.

On this occasion, Tlili Mansri reviewed possible offenses that could be committed during the electoral campaign, noting that the last amendment of the electoral law has drawn up all the offenses that are likely to cancel partially or totally a candidate list.

“The municipal election campaign will be, in many ways, the barometer that will measure the level of preparation of the various actors in the next elections,” he said.

Attending this meeting, ISIE member Anouar Ben Hassan drew up the rules and regulations for the financing of the electoral campaign and defined the mission and attributions of the “financial auditor”.

According to Ben Hassan, the control of the expenditure and the financing of the running lists will be operated by both the ISIE and the Court of Auditors.

The ISIE, he added, will soon publish a 70-page manual dedicated to campaign activities and another guide for candidate lists on campaign financing.

Another meeting with the heads of the District of Greater Tunis for municipal elections and civil society representatives will take place tomorrow.

These meetings will be followed by similar meetings in all the governorates of the country.

The municipal election campaign will take place from April 14 to May 4, 2018 and the election will take place on May 6, 2018.
