It is unacceptable to take future of students hostage and compromise school year (Youssef Chahed)

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said on Friday that it is unacceptable to take the future of the students hostage and compromise the school year, referring to the decision of the secondary education union not to return the grades.

In a plenary address to the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) on the government’s hearing on the country’s general situation, Chahed instructed the Minister of Education to take all necessary measures to resolve this issue and resume dialogue.

“No one is questioning the demands of teachers,” he said, adding that the government is ensuring that these demands are met to the extent possible.

The Prime Minister added that at the end of the cabinet meeting, it was decided to devote an envelope of 500 million dinars to the financing of a fund intended to restore the educational establishments and to improve school canteens and complexes.

According to him, a strategy has also been put in place to revise the mapping of public schools, rethink the system of secondary and basic teacher training and fight against school dropout.

As part of this strategy, the school timetable and the single session system will be revised.

The Prime Minister pointed out that educational institutions suffer from several problems, like essentially the deterioration of the infrastructure of the educational establishments that contributed to the rise of violence and suicide and to the appearance of certain phenomena such as the consumption of narcotic drugs in school sphere.

He said that 170 cases of suicide and more than 170,000 cases of violence in middle and high schools were recorded in 2017.

These phenomena, he said, are the main causes of the deterioration of school results and the level of education in Tunisia, which is why, he said, Tunisia was ranked at the bottom of the list by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

In another connection, the Prime Minister said that the government remains committed to affirmative action in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the second republic.

In this respect, he said that means will be examined to devote from the next year, to the brightest graduates coming from the interior regions, a quota in the grandes ecoles.
