Italian cuisine week in Tunisia November 20-26

The second Italian cuisine week will take place in Tunisia from November 20 to 26.

The event, launched by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and involving the entire Italian diplomatic network, aims to promote gastronomic and oenological culinary traditions as distinctive signs of Italian identity and culture, says a statement issued by the Italian Embassy in Tunis.

This year, the Embassy of Italy in Tunis offers an appetizing calendar, rich in events organised in co-operation with the Italian Cultural Institute, the ICE-Italian Agency for Foreign Trade and the Tunisian-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Commerce and Industry.

Throughout the week, several restaurants in Tunis and Sousse will celebrate the love for good cookery by offering special rates for their Italian menus, the statement added.

The week will be inaugurated with a dinner prepared by the famous chef Elia Grillotti who will prepare specialties of the city of Rieti, to support the agri-food production of Lazio, region that was struck last year by the earthquake that caused several victims and damage.

The programme includes another evening dedicated to tasting typical Italian dishes and “dolce vita”.

A roundtable meeting will be organised by the Italian Institute of Culture around olive oil, an essential product of the Italian and Tunisian food industry.

Among the speakers at the symposium, there will be eminent experts from both countries, in particular Mr. Andrea Carassi, Director General of the Italian Assitol Association, and on the Tunisian side Mr. Abdessalem Loued, President of the Trade Union Chamber of the sector in the Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) and Karima Chtiri from the National Office of Oil.

There will also be a conference on the Mediterranean diet which represents a real point of contact between the culinary traditions of both countries and a screening of Pane e Tulipani followed by Italian refreshments.

Recognizing the importance of education and training in food, a rich exchange will be established between students of the Institute of Higher Tourist Studies of Sidi Dhrif and their colleagues of the Piedmont branch of the professional training school EnAIP, under the guidance of Chef Paolo Donato, according to the same source.

The students of the Port El Kantaoui Higher Institute of Tourism under the direction of Tunisian-Italian chef Karim Larbi, who comes especially from the Esmeralda Coast in Sardinia, will discover the Italian seafood preparation and will offer an appetizing lunch in their institute in Sousse.
