IVD-Public hearings: falsification of elections at centre of testimonies

The falsification of the results of the elections was at the centre of the testimonies exposed during the 11th public hearings organised by the Truth and Dignity Commission (IVD), Friday night in Tunis.

Siheme Ben Sedrine, IVD president said at a press conference on Thursday that the IVD auditioned ten people on the falsification of election results during 36 electoral terms organised in Tunisia (presidential, legislative, municipal and referendum).

“Most of the invited witnesses responded favourably except for a limited number,” she said, saying that those who refused to give evidence would be prosecuted in accordance with article 66 of the transitional justice. It states that anyone who wilfully refuses to issue testimony on violations and financial corruption will be punished with imprisonment.

She said that the people interviewed are candidates who are victims of rigged elections, fraud and witnesses.

“Our aim is to reveal the falsification of the will of the people represented by the rigging of the results of the elections, starting from the registration of the voters in the lists throughout the electoral process to the candidate lists, the media coverage, control of voting, counting and control, announcement of results and its repercussions, “she added.

On 17 November, the IVD started organising public hearings of victims of serious human rights violations between 1955 and 2013, marked by the events in the mining basin, the prosecution of members of the Islamist current as well as the period of the split between the bourguists and the Youssefists.

Friday’s hearings were attended by national figures, members of the Constituent Assembly, MPs of the House of People’s Representatives and civil society activists.
