IVD submits to Nabeul Transitional Justice Chamber report on serious human rights violations

Truth and Dignity Commission (French:IVD) President Sihem Ben Sedrine said, Friday, she has submitted to the Nabeul Transitional Justice Chamber a file on human rights violations.

“This case, which deals with serious violations of human rights and crimes against humanity, involves 33 individuals, including the ministers of the Interior, Justice and Health in office in 1991,” said the IVD president at a meeting with the press in Tunis.

According to Ben Sedrine, the case was submitted by an IVD delegation to the public prosecutor at the Nabeul Court of First Instance, which hosts a specialised judicial chamber. It contains irrefutable evidence of human rights violations that caused the death of an individual in the “Rachid Chammakh” case.

“Thirty-three suspects are accused of committing these violations in this case,” the same source said.

The transfer of the files to these judicial chambers will make it possible to uphold the principles of accountability in accordance with the organic law on the establishment of transitional justice and its organisation, she explained.

It also aims to fight against impunity and to prevent those responsible from evading their sanctions, she went on saying.

In another connection, Ben Sedrine indicated that the IVD board has decided to extend the mandate of the Commission until the end of February 2019 in accordance with Article 18 of the Organic Law on Transitional Justice.

The mandate of the IVD is expected to expire on December 31, 2018, in line with a schedule developed for this purpose.

Late March, the parliament voted against extending the mandate of the Truth and Dignity Commission, which was originally scheduled to end on May 31, with zero votes in favour, 63 against and two abstentions.

Many MPs, including those of the Ennahdha party and the Democratic bloc, walked out of the parliament before the vote. No MPs voted for the renewal of the IVD mandate.
