Jelma protests: Agreement for negotiation with regional authorities reached (URT)

Secretary-General of the Regional Labour Union in Sidi Bouzid Mohamed Lazhar Gammoudi announced Tuesday in a statement to TAP, that it had been agreed with the population and the regional authorities to stop the pumping of water from the well of Souaybia and to hold a negotiation session with the various stakeholders to reach a satisfactory solution for all.

This agreement had been agreed upon after negotiations between the regional authorities and representatives of the URT and the population, adds Gammoudi, stressing the legitimacy of the claims related to the locals’ access to drinking water.

Police forces deployed at the Souaybia well withdrew, TAP reported.

On Tuesday morning, clashes took place between the police and protesters who gathered near the well and stopped the pumping of water, which started after works done during the night.

Concurrently, a general strike has been staged throughout the delegation of Jelma at the call of the Local Labour Union, in protest against the use of law enforcement to ensure the connection of the Souaybia well to the network of the National Company for Water Exploitation and Distribution (SONEDE).
