Jhinaoui affirms Tunisia’s readiness to continue supporting UN mission in Libya

The latest developments in Libya and the meeting proposed by the Secretary-General of the Arab League at the end of September in New York on the Libyan file were at the centre of the meeting held Tuesday between Foreign Minister Khemies Jhinaoui and Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salame.

The two sides discussed the meeting of the High-Level Committee of the African Union on Libya, scheduled for 9 September in Brazzaville, Congo.

Jhinaoui informed the UN official of the contacts established by Tunisia with the different Libyan parties as part of the initiative of President Beji Caid Essebsi.

He stressed the central role of the United Nations in coordinating efforts to achieve a comprehensive political solution to the Libyan crisis, affirming Tunisia’s readiness to continue supporting the UN mission in that country and to provide means enabling it to carry out its work at best.

The minister also stressed the role of the neighbouring countries (Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt) in supporting the UN efforts.

For his part, Ghassan Salame stressed the need to hasten taking of practical measures to settle the Libyan crisis which, he said, is a regional and international issue. He warned against the multiplicity of initiatives that might scatter the efforts in this sense.
